Will Thompson

Your Next District Attorney

Will Thompson was born in Bryan, Texas while his father, a career army officer, was attending graduate school at Texas A & M. Will lived in several places while growing up including six years in Bangkok, Thailand. He attended high school in Huntsville and attended The University of Texas at Austin on a Marine Corps scholarship. Upon graduation in 1984, Will married his wife Mary, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and served as a Marine Corps officer for nine years. Will and Mary have two adult children, Brian and Sarah and one grandson, Jude.

After leaving the Marine Corps in 1993, Will worked in the securities industry for 12 years employed with Prudential, Merrill Lynch and Edward Jones where he managed his own office and more than $50 million of customer investments.

Will attended law school at Texas Wesleyan School of Law (now Texas A & M School of Law) in Fort Worth, graduating fifth in his class in December, 2006 and was licensed to practice law in May 2007. He joined the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office on May 7, 2007, four months after the newly elected District Attorney, Lowell Thompson, took office. Initially he served as a misdemeanor prosecutor for two years and then moved up to prosecute felonies and served as the misdemeanor section chief. In 2010, Lowell Thompson promoted Will to serve as the First Assistant. He served in that role for more than eight years until he became the Interim Criminal District Attorney after the tragic death of Lowell Thompson in October 2018.

During his service in the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office Will has prosecuted virtually every type of case including narcotics, DWI, intoxication manslaughter, aggravated robbery, homicide, organized crime, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assaults of children. He has tried more than 100 cases to juries in Navarro County courts. Will worked closely with Lowell Thompson to implement various initiatives including a “no refusal” policy for intoxication offenses which increased the rate of conviction from 50% to 95%; a pretrial diversion program for young, nonviolent first-time offenders; and training & protocols for investigation of family violence assaults which has also increased the rate of successful prosecution. Will has conducted numerous training programs with newer prosecutors and with law enforcement officers from every agency in Navarro County.

“I believe my training and experience in various leadership roles in the District Attorney’s office, the military, and in business as well as the fact that I’ve tried more than 100 cases to juries in Navarro County courts makes me uniquely qualified to lead the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office.”
